Budgeting

What do custom wood windows cost in Canada?

There is no honest universal price per window. Size, operation, glass, wood, finish, cladding, hardware and delivery all change the answer. Here is how to build a useful budget and compare quotations properly.

Custom real-wood picture windows framing a coastal landscape

The practical answer

Price follows the opening, not a stock-size chart.

A small fixed picture window and a large operable tilt-and-turn unit are not comparable. Neither are a double-pane all-wood system and a triple-pane aluminum-clad system with custom colour, safety glass and complex shipping.

Fenstür does not add a “custom-size penalty.”

The product is manufactured to the project. Cost changes because material, glass area, hardware, finishing and production requirements change—not simply because a dimension is non-standard.

The specifications with the greatest effect on price.

Operation

Fixed picture windows generally require less hardware than tilt-and-turn, casement or awning units.

Size and glass weight

Larger units use more material, heavier glass and hardware sized for the resulting load.

Frame system

Fenstür's 78 mm and 106 mm systems serve different glazing, performance and certification requirements.

All wood or clad

Aluminum cladding adds fabrication and finishing while reducing exterior maintenance.

Glass package

Double-pane, triple-pane, laminated, safety, acoustic and project-specific coatings affect cost.

Species and finish

Wood selection, clear coat, stain, paint and custom colour matching require different materials and processes.

Configuration

Mullions, shapes, sidelites, transoms, grids and coordinated door packages affect manufacturing time.

Delivery

Crating, destination, access and shipment size matter for projects across Canada and the USA.

Spend where the project receives lasting value.

Prioritize the frame system, glass and exposure strategy before decorative upgrades. A well-selected system can improve comfort, air tightness, condensation resistance and durability for decades. Finish, hardware colour and species can then be aligned with the architectural intent and available budget.

Control cost thoughtfully

  • Use picture windows where ventilation is unnecessary.
  • Choose the 78 mm system where the performance target permits.
  • Coordinate repeatable details across the package.
  • Use standard finishes and hardware colours where appropriate.

Invest for exposure and performance

  • Consider aluminum cladding for demanding exterior conditions.
  • Select triple-pane or specialized glass when justified by the energy model.
  • Use the 106 mm system for applicable high-performance scopes.
  • Resolve large openings and heavy glass early.

Why two “wood-window” quotes can be far apart.

Compare whether the quotation includes real structural wood, frame depth, glass thickness, hardware capacity, multipoint locking, continuous gaskets, factory finishing, aluminum cladding, tested performance, crating and delivery. A lower number may describe a materially different product.

Fenstür wood windows do not equal every other wood window. The value is in the complete system: European design thinking, premium components, exceptional Canadian timber, precise manufacturing, testing and direct technical support.

Compare real wood with wood-look substitutes and compare North American manufacturing with imported European windows.

What to send for a useful preliminary budget.

  • Plans, window schedule or approximate opening sizes
  • Project city, province or state
  • Preferred operations and opening directions
  • All-wood or wood-aluminum-clad preference
  • Double-pane, triple-pane, Passive House or other performance target
  • Wood species and approximate finish direction
  • Expected construction and delivery timing

Early information does not need to be perfect. It needs to be specific enough to avoid comparing incompatible products.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fenstür charge extra for custom window sizes?

Fenstür manufactures to the project and does not apply a generic custom-size surcharge. Cost still changes with actual size, material quantity, glass weight, hardware and production requirements.

Are aluminum-clad wood windows more expensive?

Yes. Aluminum cladding adds material, fabrication and powder-coated finishing, but it can substantially reduce exterior maintenance in demanding exposures.

Is triple-pane glass always necessary?

No. The best glass package depends on climate, orientation, energy targets, solar gain, acoustics and the applicable building requirements.

Can Fenstür quote a complete house package?

Yes. Fenstür can coordinate exterior windows, entry and swinging doors, lift-and-slide systems and interior doors with aligned materials and finishes.
