Not every window described as “wood” is built from wood.
Some windows use vinyl or fiberglass frames with laminated grain, stain-like colour or a thin decorative interior layer. Those products may suit projects prioritizing low initial maintenance, but they are not the same material or construction as a genuine timber frame and sash.
Fenstür windows use engineered real-wood components as the structural heart of the product. Aluminum cladding can protect the exterior, but the window remains a wood window—not a synthetic frame dressed to resemble one.

The right choice depends on architecture, exposure, budget and maintenance expectations. For genuine timber windows, the next decision is often whether the exterior should remain wood or receive aluminum cladding. The point is not that every project must use wood. It is that a wood-look finish should not be mistaken for the real material.
Look beyond the showroom sample
A decorative film is still a weather-exposed layer.
Wood-look laminates are engineered products, and quality varies. Their appearance depends on a printed or coloured film, protective surface layers, adhesive bond, edges and compatibility with the underlying profile. Heat, ultraviolet light, moisture, cleaning chemicals and sealants all become part of the surface system's long-term performance.
That does not mean every laminate fails early. It means buyers should ask what happens to the specific product over time. Potential surface changes can include fading or colour shift, gloss change, shrinkage at edges and seams, bubbling, lifting or delamination if the surface or bond is damaged or loses adhesion.
Real wood also weathers and its finish requires appropriate care. The difference is fundamental: the grain and character continue through the material, and many worn wood finishes can be renewed rather than trying to repair a decorative image bonded to a synthetic frame.
Read the warranty—not just the colour name.
RENOLIT's published North American warranty for its EXOFOL architectural films lists maximum periods of 10, 15 or 20 years depending on the film grade and climate region. A warranty ending does not prove a film will fail on that date, but the climate-specific terms show why product grade, exposure and documented coverage matter.
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance's AAMA 307 specification separately addresses laminates used on certified profiles, including weathering, chemical resistance, detergent resistance and sealant compatibility. Ask a wood-look supplier which laminate is used, which standard it meets, what the warranty covers in your climate and how a damaged or lifting surface is repaired.
Compare complete value, not labels.
Ask how the frame is constructed, which hardware carries the sash, how many continuous seals compress around it, what glass thickness the system supports, which whole-window ratings apply and who will provide technical help after delivery. Those answers reveal more than the word “wood” in a brochure.
